The Rideau Canal is a wonderful destination for tourists due to its numerous historic lock stations and 202 kilometers of beautiful waterway. It runs from Kingston, located at the base of Lake Ontario, all the way to Ottawa, which is the capital city of Canada. The canal is maintained by the Parks service of Canada and is considered by many to be the most picturesque and historic waterway in North America. The canal was inaugurated in May 1832 and has been functioning continuously since then.
If you're interested in learning about the history of Ottawa, a visit to the Bytown Museum is highly recommended. The museum provides an overview of Ottawa's past, from the construction of the canal to the city's rise as the capital of Canada. The museum is located in the oldest stone building in Ottawa, which was originally utilized as a treasury and storehouse during the canal's construction.
The dedicated multi-use pathways that run along both sides of the Rideau Canal are popular for cycling, running and walking. The land is mostly flat with gardens, parks and neighborhoods lining the way. Rent a BMW bike for up to 4 hours from the Concierge Desk at the Westin Hotel for $10.00. All proceeds will benefit Ottawa's local children’s hospital.
The ByWard Market is where Ottawa was born. Established by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada’s oldest and largest public markets. Today, the Market is Ottawa’s number one tourist attraction and is the premier destination for shopping, dining, and the arts.
