things to do IN

THE NATION's capital

the canadian tulip festival

Not only can you see tulips blooming across the city, but the Canadian Tulip Festival also runs from May 13th to 23rd.

Commissioners Park is the place to be to see the most flowers (over 300,000 tulips!) and join in on the festivities.

The Canadian Tulip Festival is an event that was established to commemorate the historical gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians as a sign of international friendship after World War II. The Festival also honors the contribution of the Canadian troops in liberating the Netherlands and Europe, and recognizes the birth of Dutch Princess Margriet in Ottawa during the war. She is the only royal figure ever born in Canada.

the National GALLERY of art

Housed in one of Canada’s most iconic public buildings, the National Gallery of Canada is among the world’s most respected art institutions. Check out the exhibitions and galleries that will be on during your visit to the Nation's Capital.

Open 10am-5pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Admission: $20

WALK THE RIDEAU

The Rideau Canal is a wonderful destination for tourists due to its numerous historic lock stations and 202 kilometers of beautiful waterway. It runs from Kingston, located at the base of Lake Ontario, all the way to Ottawa, which is the capital city of Canada. The canal is maintained by the Parks service of Canada and is considered by many to be the most picturesque and historic waterway in North America. The canal was inaugurated in May 1832 and has been functioning continuously since then.

If you're interested in learning about the history of Ottawa, a visit to the Bytown Museum is highly recommended. The museum provides an overview of Ottawa's past, from the construction of the canal to the city's rise as the capital of Canada. The museum is located in the oldest stone building in Ottawa, which was originally utilized as a treasury and storehouse during the canal's construction.

The dedicated multi-use pathways that run along both sides of the Rideau Canal are popular for cycling, running and walking. The land is mostly flat with gardens, parks and neighborhoods lining the way. Rent a BMW bike for up to 4 hours from the Concierge Desk at the Westin Hotel for $10.00. All proceeds will benefit Ottawa's local children’s hospital.

visit the byward market

The ByWard Market is where Ottawa was born.  Established by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada’s oldest and largest public markets. Today, the Market is Ottawa’s number one tourist attraction and is the premier destination for shopping, dining, and the arts.

Make sure to start at 69 George Street so that you can pick up a delicious Beavertail along the way!
